New Work by Ben Goldberg

Posted Aug 22, 02:31 PM by Peter Bonos

On Ben Goldberg:
Composer and Clarinetist Ben Goldberg has been turning heads in the world of Jewish Music ever since he stepped onto the scene with the Klezmorim in 1987 and made his mark with the formation of the New Klezmer Trio in 1991. Goldberg embodies the best traits of the prodigious jazz, klezmer, and contemporary musician. His instrumental abilities push the envelope of cutting-edge new music while embodying the timeless spirit of the old-world klezmer clarinet masters and modern-jazz legends such as Steve Lacy.

Goldberg’s compositional prowess is showcased in collaborations with Tin Hat Trio, Charlie Hunter and Myra Melford— However; it is his work with the Ben Goldberg Quintet that represents his most singular voice and complete artistic vision. With the upcoming four-movement composition “Orphic Machine,” Goldberg has set out to create his most intellectual and modernist work. The suite is based on the postmodernist poetry of Allen Grossman and explores the themes of interplay between art forms in the subject’s experience. As Goldberg puts it: “Summa Lyrica examines the existential and philosophical workings of poetic structure in relation to the development of consciousness through the interaction of art, language, and culture.”

Orphic Machine:

The quintet will be augmented by an additional four special guests, featuring an all-star ensemble of Downtown NYC’s best Avant-Jazz musicians and special guest, Myra Melford. Bay Area audiences are fortunate to have the opportunity to see Ben Goldberg and his peers delve into a composition of new music that will surely become one of the most remarkable concerts of the coming year.

Thanks to a generous matching grant of $6,000 we have the opportunity to fund a premiere composition by Ben Goldberg as part of our 26th season series in March 2011. We need your help to match this donation. Help make this groundbreaking new work a part of the Jewish Music Festival’s 26th season: We are looking to raise $6000 in matching funds by the end of September.
