SCHOOL OUTREACH PROGRAM, 2006
GLENN HARTMAN of the NEW ORLEANS KLEZMER ALLSTARS

As part of our continuing commitment to Bay Area schools, the 21st Annual Jewish Music Festival is bringing Glenn Hartman, an acclaimed musician and accomplished teacher, into local classrooms.

Glenn is the founder and accordion player of the New Orleans Klezmer Allstars – an award-winning band whose sound Billboard praises as, “a raucous, wild spin on the popular Eastern European revival”. He has played with such esteemed musicians as Les Claypool, Robbie Robertson, John Popper, and David Lindley. Due to Hurricane Katrina, he has temporarily relocated to the Bay Area with his family. He has an MFA in music, specializing in Klezmer, and has been teaching since 1990.

His workshop program includes a history of Klezmer music, brought to life by recorded and live performance; a demonstration of the accordion, and a discussion of his personal experience with New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina. For students with a musical background, the presentation includes an investigation of Klezmer harmonies and modes. Mr. Hartman is an experienced educator with a background that ranges from teaching young children, through university level.

Check out the New Orleans Klezmer Allstars at http://www.klezmers.com . They will open the 21st Jewish Music Festival Saturday, March 4, 2006, 8:00 pm, First Congregational Church, 27th and Harrison, Oakland.

Please contact us if you are interested in adding your school to the Jewish Music Festival’s Outreach Program.
